Shutdown Report No.1Thursday, October 3, 2013
(AFSCME Council 26)
dozens of AFSCME Council 26 members gathered at
the Museum of Natural History
where we distributed our brochure listing
tourist attactions that remain open,
talked with tourists about the fulough,
distributed the brochure on tourist
buses that stopped at the museum, lined up at
the curb with our signs and
chanted and waved at motorists. We were filmed
and interviewed by print media,
TV stations from as close as the Washington, DC
area, and as far away as France
and Australia. We have already appeared on
local DC TV news and the story has
been sent to media outlets around the country
by the Reuters news service.
On another front, I have heard that some agencies may not have given furloughed workers the three digit code needed to apply for unemployment insurance online. While you should still be able to apply in person, online filing is more convenient for many people.
I have listed below the three digit code for a number of AFSCME-represented agencies. Some of these may have given the code to employees, but I decided to list them just in case. If your agency is not listed below and you did not receive the code, please let me know by replying to this email.
Architect of the Capitol 010
Capitol Visitors Center 010
Federal Aviation Administration 470
Corporation for National and Community Service 308
Department of Justice 430
Peace Corp 677
We have also developed an online Furlough Survival Guide that deals with subjects like unemployment insurance, mortgage and financial planning advice and other relevant subjects. Click here to access the guide.
We are working for an end to the shutdown that is fair to federal employees and the nation as a whole. Stop the shutdown! We want to work!
