Shutdown Report No.3

(AFSCME Council 26)

AFSCME members participated in a rally today attended by hundreds of union members. FAA Aviation Safety Inspector and Local 1653 Shop Steward Dan Ronneberg spoke about the dangerous situation created by the furlough of 800 FAA workers who do the same job as him. He explained how airplanes are not being inspected as a result--very scary.

After the rally I spoke at a panel discussion on the Shutdown along with Bill Fletcher of AFGE who wrote the book "Solidarity Divided," an excellent analysis of the labor movement and what it must do to succeed. I recommend it highly to all AFSCME members.

During his presentation Bill made a good suggestion: write letters to the editor. I would consider not just writing to major newspapers like the Washington Post,  but also to local papers like the Gazette. In your letter, explain how you are being affected by the furlough, the nature of your work, and how the Country is being harmed by you not being able to do your job.

News reports indicate that both Houses of Congress are considering legislation to give back pay to furloughed federal workers. I urge you to call Congress as soon you finish this letter as they might vote on the legislation as soon as Saturday. It doesn't matter if your Reps' offices are closed --- leave a voice mail message asking that they support the legislation. Telephone number are listed below.

We had a great week of activism, but we need more of you to get involved. Next week I will give you more ideas on how you can particpate in the fight against the Shutdown.

At the very bottom of this report, check out some of the press coverage of AFSCME federal workers' activism this week.

Furloughed Workers Play Tour Guides

Oct 2 3:45 pm  Jada F. Smith, New York Times

... The Levandowski family, from Lake Tomahawk, Wis., was one of several stopping by the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History Wednesday morning, where a group of furloughed federal employees passed out copies of The Federal Workers Guide to Shutdown D.C

. On one side, the leaflet listed all the sites and museums that were still open, with the other side listing the monuments, parks and memorials that were closed because of the government shutdown.  ....  Since were all federal employees, we all serve the public, said Saul Schniderman, a Library of Congress librarian and union president [AFSCME Local 2910]. So we thought, what better way to come serve the public than to advise tourist what museums are open. Were here both as a way to help tourists and as a way to let the public know, as our sign says, that wed rather be working for you. We dont want to be home today.
