Over the weekend the House of Representatives voted to give back pay to furloughed workers after the shutdown. This is a direct result of the pressure put on the House Republicans by AFSCME and other federal unions. It shows that demonstrations work. All indications at this writing are that the Senate will also pass the bill and the President has already said that he will sign it.
But the fight isn't over. There is still no end in sight to the shutdown, and with the deadline looming for raising the debt ceiling, we do not know when anyone represented by Council 26 will receive a pay check. In addition, the country is hurting because important federal programs and services---including those that you provide---are suspended. If you didn't participate in any of our actions last week, here's another chance to help us keep up the pressure.
We also encourage you to apply for unemployment insurance (UI), if you haven't already. Keep in mind, though, that you will have to remimburse the money from UI if you receive back pay. Continue to contact your creditors, landlords and mortgage holders to explain your situation and to ask for extra time to pay, if needed. Check out the resources in our "Furlough Survival Guide".
