Unions send letter to Vice-President Biden

(Council 26)

Seventeen unions representing federal workers, including AFSCME, have sent a letter to Vice-President Biden who is currently negotiating a deal on the debt ceiling with a bipartisan group of lawmakers. The unions have heard that the group is very close to an agreement that would significantly increase what federal employees pay for their pensions – essentially what amounts to almost a 6% pay cut.  They won’t tax the rich and big corporations but they will cut the pay of workers. The letter urges the Vice-President to oppose this proposal and “to publicly reject those who express anti-government hatred as a pretext for shifting money from the hard-working middle class that has endured the brunt of this terrible recession, to the wealthy, well-connected, powerful, and greedy investment class that created it.” To read the letter, click here.
