Will Senator Coburn cause another FAA shutdown at the end of this week?

(AFSCME Council 26)

Senator Coburn (R-OK) is single handedly holding up the bill that will extend aviation and surface transportation programs.  The deadline for the FAA extension is Friday at midnight.  Unless Senator Coburn gives in, the FAA will go into partial shutdown again this weekend.  AFSCME, NATCA and PASS lobbyists are working feverishly to stop this from happening.

Senator Coburn wants to add a surface transportation provision to the bill that would let states ignore a mandate that 10 percent of surface transportation funds be spent on transportation enhancements, which include bike paths and safety projects.  Senator Coburn will lose on this issue.  He has little or no support in the Senate and even Senator Inhofe (R-OK) disagrees with him.  Coburn isnt even asking for a vote (because hes lost on this issue several times) but is just demanding that his provision get added to the bill.  If he continues to hold this bill hostage, Senator Reid will have to invoke cloture and the final vote on HR 2887 will take place next week.  That will force the FAA into partial shutdown again.
